From the Associate Director’s Desk
Tiffani Cullin-Johnson
On May 22, 2010, Families, Family Organization staff, Eagles Riders, and community professionals joined together to celebrate the end of another successful Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week for the state of Nebraska. Over 50 Northeast Nebraska residents attended the celebration in Lincoln. Our first event of the day included presenting letters from families concerning Children’s Mental Health to Senator Campbell on the steps of the Capitol. Afterwards, families joined together for a youth panel presentation, a presentation by national speaker Dr. Ron, and a meal and entertainment.
We had great family representation from our service area this year, and we look forward to filling two bus loads of families next year for the Lincoln celebration! Thank you to all that attended and supported the event.
As the school year ends and summer break begins, we wish all families a safe and enjoyable summer season!

Caring for Your Teenager (Copyright © 2003 American Academy of Pediatrics) 4/29/10
Psychiatrist: an M.D. (doctor of medicine) or D.O. (doctor of osteopathy) who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental disorders, and the only practitioner listed here who can prescribe medication. (Your child’s pediatrician can also write pre-scriptions, while some states additionally permit selected psychologists to order pharmaceutical treatment.) The psychia-trist diagnoses and prescribes medication and therapy. He may also refer the patient and/or family to others for ongoing talk therapy while he focuses on the medications.
Licensed Psychologist: a counselor with a master’s degree or doctoral degree in psychology (Psy.D.), philosophy (Ph.D.) or education (Ed.D.). Trained to make diagnoses and conduct individual and group therapy. Only psychologists are able to administer many of the tests used to measure a young person’s intellect and psychological health.
All of the mental health counselors listed below are also trained to make diagnoses and provide individual and group counsel-ing. What’s the difference, then? Their degrees and perhaps their area of specialty.
Clinical Social Worker: master’s degree in social work (M.S.W.); Licensed Clinical Social Workers (L.C.S.W.) have addi-tional supervised training and clinical work experience.
Licensed Professional Counselor: master’s degree in psychology, counseling or a related field.
